Frequently asked questions

How much tax will I pay on £35,000?

In England, Wales or Northern Ireland, £35,000 a year means £4,486.00 Income Tax and £1,794.40 National Insurance in 2026/27, leaving take-home pay of £28,719.60 a year or £2,393.30 a month. In Scotland, Income Tax is £4,501.07.

What is the Personal Allowance for 2026/27?

£12,570. It's frozen at this level. It falls by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000, so it's gone completely at £125,140.

What are the Income Tax bands in 2026/27?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 20% on £12,571 to £50,270, 40% on £50,271 to £125,140 and 45% above that. Scotland has six bands from 19% to 48%. See the full tax bands.

How much National Insurance do employees pay?

8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, and 2% on anything above £50,270. Employers pay 15% on earnings above £5,000.

Does Wales have different Income Tax rates?

Not for 2026/27. The Welsh rates of Income Tax are set at the same level as England and Northern Ireland, so a C tax code gives the same result as an ordinary code.

Why is my payslip slightly different from this calculator?

This calculator works out the tax for the whole year. Payroll works it out each pay period, so things like a pay rise mid-year, a bonus month, a different tax code or how your employer rounds can make one payslip differ by a few pounds.

What does tax code 1257L mean?

1257L is the standard tax code. It gives you the £12,570 Personal Allowance tax free. Codes ending in M or N are for Marriage Allowance, BR and D0 tax everything at one rate, and a K code means you owe tax on something like a company car. Try the tax code calculator.

Is salary sacrifice better than relief at source?

Usually, because salary sacrifice saves National Insurance as well as Income Tax. A relief at source contribution only gets tax relief. Compare them with the pension calculator.
