How to check your tax code

Frequently asked questions

What does the L in 1257L mean?

L means you get the standard Personal Allowance. The number is your tax-free allowance divided by 10, so 1257L gives £12,570 tax free.

What do M and N mean in a tax code?

M means you receive 10% of your partner's Personal Allowance through Marriage Allowance (1383M). N means you've transferred it to your partner (1131N).

What is a BR, D0 or 0T tax code?

BR taxes all income at the basic rate (often a second job). D0 taxes all of it at 40% and D1 at 45%. 0T gives no allowance at all. NT means no tax is taken.

What does a K tax code mean?

A K code means you have income that isn't being taxed another way (such as a company car or unpaid tax) worth more than your allowance. The number times 10 is added to your taxable pay.

What does W1, M1 or X mean after my code?

These are emergency codes: tax is worked out on each pay period on its own, without using allowances from earlier in the year. It's usually fixed once HMRC has your details.

What do S and C mean at the start of a tax code?

S means you pay Scottish Income Tax and C means Welsh. For 2026/27 Welsh rates match England's.
