Frequently asked questions

How do I find my council tax band?

In England and Wales, search your postcode on the GOV.UK Check your Council Tax band service. In Scotland, use the Scottish Assessors website.

Why are council tax bands based on 1991 values?

England and Scotland have never revalued for council tax, so bands are still based on what a home would have sold for on 1 April 1991. Wales revalued using 1 April 2003 values and added band I.

How much is council tax for each band?

Each council sets its own Band D charge every year. The other bands are fixed fractions of Band D: for example Band A is 6/9 and Band H is 18/9 in England.

Can I challenge my council tax band?

Yes. In England and Wales you can ask the Valuation Office Agency to check your band; in Scotland, contact your local assessor. Bands can go down, but also up.

Is there a council tax discount if I live alone?

Yes, a 25% single person discount if you're the only adult living in the home.
