Frequently asked questions

How much student loan will I repay?

9% of your income above your plan's threshold: £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4 and £25,000 for Plan 5. Postgraduate loans are 6% above £21,000. On a £35,000 salary, a Plan 2 borrower repays £505.35 a year.

Which student loan plan am I on?

Plan 1: started in England or Wales before September 2012, or in Northern Ireland. Plan 2: England from September 2012 to July 2023, or Wales from September 2012. Plan 4: Scotland. Plan 5: England only, from August 2023. Check in your online student loan account if unsure.

Do I repay two plans at once?

If you have two undergraduate plans, you repay 9% above the lower threshold, shared between them. A postgraduate loan is repaid on top, at 6% above £21,000.

Does salary sacrifice reduce student loan repayments?

Yes. Repayments are based on your pay after salary sacrifice, so sacrificing into a pension lowers them. Relief at source and net pay pensions don't.

When is a student loan written off?

It depends on the plan: generally 25 years after first repayment for Plan 1 (or age 65 for older loans), 30 years for Plan 2 and Plan 4 (Plan 4 can be earlier), and 40 years for Plan 5.
