Frequently asked questions

How much holiday am I entitled to?

5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. For a 5-day week that's 28 days, which is also the legal maximum. Employers can include bank holidays in this.

How is holiday worked out for part-time workers?

Multiply the days you work a week by 5.6. Working 3 days a week gives 16.8 days a year.

What if I start or leave part way through the year?

Your entitlement is pro rata for the part of the holiday year you work. Starting half way through the year gives half the annual entitlement.

Can my employer make me take holiday on bank holidays?

Yes, if they count bank holidays towards your statutory leave and tell you. Your contract may give more than the minimum.

What about irregular hours or part-year workers?

For leave years starting on or after 1 April 2024, holiday for irregular-hours and part-year workers builds up at 12.07% of hours worked each pay period.
