Frequently asked questions
Is overtime pay a legal right in the UK?
No. There's no legal right to paid overtime or a higher overtime rate. Your contract sets the rate, but your average pay for all hours worked must not fall below the minimum wage.
What is time and a half?
1.5 times your normal hourly rate. On £15 an hour, time and a half is £22.50 and double time is £30.
Is overtime taxed more?
No, it's taxed at your normal marginal rate. It can look higher in a month with lots of overtime because PAYE treats that month's pay as if it were your regular pay.
