How dividend tax is worked out

  1. Add your dividends to your other income.
  2. Your Personal Allowance is used by your salary first, then dividends.
  3. The first £500 of dividends is taxed at 0%.
  4. The rest is taxed at 10.75%, 35.75% or 39.35% depending on which band it falls in, after your other income.

Dividends don't attract National Insurance, which is why many company directors pay themselves a small salary and the rest as dividends. Corporation Tax is paid on company profits before dividends.
